DIGITALIZATION NORDSCHLEIFE

THE PROJECT

Together with Fujitsu, we show how history, the present and the future can be optimally combined. For more safety by means of advanced AI technology on the most demanding race track in the world: the Nordschleife. In this way, the unique tourist drives in particular can become even safer.

The first installations as well as tests and analyses for this groundbreaking project have already been underway for a year. HD cameras were installed along a 2.8-kilometre section of the track and connected with fibre optics. Fujitsu developed an AI system with which safety-relevant incidents are immediately registered and forwarded to the operations management.

At future races, track days, tourist drives and test drives by the automotive industry, for example, drivers are to be warned immediately of dangers via LED displays on the track, so that everyone involved can assess the situation more quickly and react accordingly.

After a year of successful test installations, the entire Nordschleife will be equipped with the AI-based system over the next two years. The new system will be fully operational in the 2025 season and will then monitor around 21 kilometres of track.

The AI solution for the digitalisation of the Nordschleife will significantly increase safety for vehicles on the track. Where humans reach their limits, the AI solution comes into play and thus supports track marshals in recognising dangers and deviations from regular traffic.
