BELMOT Oldtimer Grand Prix 2025: More history, more fascination, more action

03.07.2025

There is just under a month to go until the BELMOT Oldtimer-Grand-Prix, and the starting grids for the 13 races and demo runs are gradually taking shape. The first series organizers can even report a “full house” – and, as is typical for this traditional classic event at the Nürburgring, class and mass, tradition and performance will once again come together this year: A perfect mix for a historic motorsport weekend at its finest. There are some fascinating highlights in the three Formula starting fields, which range from the early days of Grand Prix racing and the infancy of the Formula 1 World Championship to the 1960s and 1980s: this fascinating era can be experienced at first hand with the “racing driving school cars” of the junior classes of the time and the magnificent cars of the Cosworth Formula 1 era (1966 to 1985). From the forefathers of Formula 1 to the 1980sFour free-standing wheels, a driver's seat – and the Formula racing car is ready to go. It quickly became apparent that this simple design principle could be used to create an exciting sport, and so the oldest Grand Prix cars at the BELMOT Oldtimer Grand Prix date back to the pre-war era. They start in the HGPCA (Historic Grand Prix Cars Association), which announces a field of almost 30 front-engined monoposti. They represent the prehistory and early history of Formula 1, which began in 1950. Particularly fascinating: the pre-war Maseratis built between 1933 and 1939 find their successors in the 250F models of the early Formula 1 years. Formula 2 racing cars (which were also allowed to compete in the World Championship at the time) will also be on the starting line from this period, as will British models such as Cooper and Lotus. Of course, the Ferrari 246 Dino, which marked the transition to the early 1960s, is also included: a fast-paced and fascinating journey through time, where even forgotten car manufacturers such as Peirce, Alta, Emeryson, and Scarab can be seen once again. This promises pure racing history, just like the cars of the legendary three-liter Formula 1 (from 1966). When F1 designers were still calling the shots...Ford Cosworth DFV – no other term better sums up the era of Formula 1 between 1966 and 1985. The three-liter V8 engine racked up over 150 Grand Prix victories and was (in various evolutionary stages) the benchmark in the world championship for 19 years. The British racing series “Masters Racing Legends” is bringing these impressive race cars with their distinctive sound back to the Nürburgring. They date back to a time in the premier class when it wasn't the big manufacturers but the small garages that dominated the scene. McLaren, Williams, Arrows, Tyrrell: these names are music to the ears of motorsport fans, and of course the models from these legendary teams will be on display at the Ring. Lotus is also on the list, as it was team boss and founder Colin Chapman himself who was instrumental in the development of the most successful Formula 1 engine of all time. Of course, there were also German drivers in the premier class during this period, such as Rolf Stommelen (1969–1978), Jochen Mass (1973–1982), Manfred Winkelhock (1982–1985), and Stefan Bellof (1984–1985). However, another part of Germany's Grand Prix history is that there has been a race in the premier class here almost every year since 1951. And time and again, the Nürburgring was the venue. Junghans, once again the official timekeeping partner of the BELMOT Oldtimer Grand Prix this year, was also well known in top-class sport in the 1970s. As innovative timekeeping experts, the Black Forest-based company also made a name for itself in Formula 1 at the time – and this year, it is taking over the patronage of the Masters Racing Legends races at the Oldtimer Grand Prix. The winner will even receive one of the strictly limited edition models for the 52nd edition of the OGP as a special award – with a unique commemorative engraving, of course! The “driving school cars” of the stars of yesteryearThe German (and international) Formula 1 stars would not have been able to make their careers without suitable “driving school cars,” and it is precisely these authentic speedsters from Formula 3 and Formula Ford, for example, that are presented in the packed starting field of the Graf Berghe von Trips Cup. The oldest historic racing series in Germany has announced the maximum possible 36 monoposti for the BELMOT Oldtimer Grand Prix, in which world stars and private drivers learned their craft between 1966 and 1992. Among the cars on display will be the original Martini Mk42 that Ivan Capelli drove to the Formula 3 European Championship title in 1984. An Italian championship-winning car driven by Nicola Larini will also be there – the future DTM and Formula 1 driver won the title in the Dallara F356 Alfa Romeo in 1986. German racing history is represented by John Westenberg, who is bringing a Ralt RT30 VW formerly driven by Bertram Schäfer to the Nürburgring, in which Kris Nissen became Formula 3 vice-champion in 1985. Highlights like these show how intensely racing history can be relived here – topped off with exciting races and the wonderful mix of sound and performance of the monoposti. Lavish starting fields for touring cars and GTsThe fact that spectators at the Nürburgring can look forward to full starting fields does not only apply to the formula classes. The two races for touring cars and GTs in the German Historic Automobile Championship (DHAM) were so popular that the organizers of the Historic Championship '65 and '81 had to announce that “nothing more is possible” because the maximum number of vehicles permitted according to the track inspection report had already been reached. This limit has not yet been reached in the sports car starting fields, but fantastic vehicles have been announced that will ensure a unique spectacle on the track, reminiscent of the heyday of sports cars and prototypes. Numerous former racing stars have also registered for the touring car races, which will revive the golden age of the DTM. The first weekend in August is therefore almost a must-attend event.

03.07.2025

The new BMW M2 CS set a new benchmark on the Nordschleife on April 11, 2025. With BMW M development engineer Jörg Weidinger at the wheel, it completed the 20.823-kilometer-long version of the Nürburgring Nordschleife in 7:25.5 minutes, beating the previous best time for compact cars by eight seconds. All record drives and further information Onboard through the Green HellThe record lap of the BMW M2 CS is now available on the Nürburgring YouTube channel. The onboard footage from the cockpit of the vehicle offers the opportunity to relive this fantastic lap. Information about the official “Nürburgring record laps”The following principle applies to all drives: one track, one complete lap, one time – according to uniform standards. In addition to timekeeping with calibrated measuring technology, official record attempts and attempts to achieve a lap time are always accompanied by a notary. In addition to monitoring the timekeeping, the vehicle is also inspected. TÜV Rheinland checks for standard conformity and documents this. The exact length of the track and the start and finish lines are precisely defined. A full lap of the Nordschleife is driven and measured with a flying start (20.8 kilometers). The vehicle categories for record drives and official lap times at the Nürburgring are divided into different segments by the Federal Motor Transport Authority and specially defined special classes.

NLS Light: New faces and old acquaintances

02.07.2025

“Small ones make it big,” was the motto of the Mini Playback Show back in the 1990s. The same could be said of the premiere of NLS-Light. For the first time in the history of the ADAC Nürburgring Langstrecken-Serie (NLS), a race will take place without the presence of large and powerful vehicles. This time, others take the spotlight. New faces and familiar names are writing their own stories. A big barbecue party for all teams will take place in the paddock on Friday evening to celebrate grassroots motorsport on the most beautiful racetrack in the world. Tickets for the race start at 25 euros, and youths up to 14 years of age enjoy free admission. Those who can’t attend in person can follow the entire race day via livestream. This coming Saturday, NLS-Light will celebrate its debut on the Nordschleife. Although it’s not an official championship points race, nearly 60 cars have registered for the 4-hour event. While the grid is smaller than that of a typical NLS race, it shows the strong interest from teams in the new format. “NLS-Light is a welcome event to give interested teams a low-barrier entry point to experience the NLS,” says VLN Managing Director Mike Jäger. “From the start, we knew that a date just two weeks after the 24h race at the Nürburgring and with seven federal states already on school holidays wouldn’t work for a regular points round. So we turned necessity into a virtue. Our core values—customer friendliness, professionalism, and strong media coverage—remain unchanged. I’m convinced this will be a successful event for everyone.” This time, a different group of contenders will fight for overall victory. In the absence of vehicles from classes SP9, SP-X, SP-Pro, and Cup 2, GT4s, TCRs, and other race cars move to center stage—including entries from Max Kruse Racing. The team from Duisburg is entering three cars in the AT class, including two of the brand-new VW Golf GTI Clubsport 24h. Drivers Benjamin Leuchter and Heiko Hammel (#19), Christoph Lenz and Jasmin Preisig (#333, Audi RS3), and Nico Otto and Timo Hochwind (#76) will share the cockpits. “We’re incredibly excited,” says Leuchter, who also serves as team principal. “Our stated goal is to fight for the overall win. We’ll be up against more powerful cars, but with our front-wheel-drive cars we have an edge especially in the corners—from Hohe Acht to Galgenkopf, we’ll try to maximize our performance. We’re going all in.” A victory would mark not only the team’s first overall win, but also the first for a car running on alternative fuels. Their rivals in the AT class include Carrie Schreiner and Janina Schall in the BMW M4 GT4 from ‘Girls Only – Ready to rock the Green Hell’. In the GT4 SP10 class, Black Falcon is fielding a BMW M4 GT4 for American drivers Judson Holt, David Ogburn, and Denny Stripling. In SP8T, the Plusline and Schmickler Performance teams are also competing with BMW M4 GT4s. Schmickler also has a Porsche Cayman GT4 CS in SP7, while Extreme Racing enters a nearly identical Cayman. Not to be underestimated are the Cup 3 cars from the Porsche Endurance Trophy Nürburgring. One of the top dark horses for the overall win is the Porsche 911 Cup (997) of Aimpoint Racing by Gabionen24.de in the H4 class, driven by Axel and Max Friedhoff, who last competed in the NLS in 2023. A colorful standout in the field is the pink and gray Mitsubishi Lancer CT9A from the Fuchs-Turbo team. This speedy estate car has already earned victories in the Rundstrecken Challenge Nürburgring. Owner Mario Fuchs and Eugen Weber share the cockpit. “I think NLS-Light is a really cool idea, and we spontaneously decided to take part—even though I wouldn’t have minded racing in a regular event with the big cars,” says Fuchs. “Of course, we looked at how our lap times stack up. And if nothing breaks, we should be in good shape for this race.” The local hero from Grafschaft has prepared meticulously. How did he come up with the idea of racing a wagon? “Back when we built it, the estate version was actually cheaper. Everyone supported the idea: ‘Go for it, people will love it,’ they said. And they were right—the color certainly helps too. We’re really happy with the Lancer. In corners, we lose a bit to the TCR cars, but thanks to the aerodynamics without a wing, we make up ground on the straights.” It’s a return to roots for David Pittard, who normally competes in the NLS in an Aston Martin Vantage GT3. This time, he joins Graham Wilson and Andreas Ecker in a Toyota Supra entered by Jacos Paddock from Barweiler. “I’m excited for NLS-Light! I’ll be racing with my long-time teammate Graham Wilson. It’ll be his first race this year, so a format without the faster classes is a great way to ease back in. We’re running with Jacos Paddock in the new Toyota Supra. Back in 2018, I did my DPN with them and we’ve since become good friends. I rent cars from Jaco when I need them, and I also coach his clients. We have a great relationship.” Bringing new talent into endurance racing is a mission for rent2Drive-racing from Döttingen, right by the Nordschleife. For the NLS-Light premiere, local roots play a major role. Marcel Weber and Richard Schäfer from Adenau want to use this stage to prove themselves with strong lap times. Interest in supporting the two young drivers was high even before the race, with their entry backed by a team-initiated fundraising campaign. A group of Renault Clios will also make a comeback—one of them entered by none other than Reinhard Sesterheim, a five-time class winner during his active racing career. For NLS-Light, he’s entering the “Screwdriver Clio” of Holger Goedicke and Lukas Krämer. “The two drivers were eager to race NLS-Light,” he says. “I couldn’t say no to that. The Nürburgring is home for me—I live just 15 kilometers away.” Sesterheim fondly remembers the golden Clio era, when up to 30 of the cars would compete: “In 2011, we won the Cup class with Dominik Brinkmann and Stephan Epp and became vice champions in the VLN.” Epp will also be part of NLS-Light, sharing a Renault Clio III Cup from aufkleben.de – Motorsport with Michael Uelwer and Timo Kaatz. NLS-Light is also the first opportunity for drivers to compete with a national-level A license. One of them is Paul Winter, who shares a BMW 325i from EiFelkind Racing with Markus Fischer and Henning Hausmeier. “I’ve had all the results needed for the international C license for a while now, and I’ve even filled out the application,” says Winter, who has been racing in the RCN since 2022. “But the social media post that a national A license is sufficient for NLS-Light came just in time last week and gave me the push I needed to finally make the jump into the NLS. The performance tests in the RCN are great, but racing on the Nordschleife for real and fighting for positions has been a lifelong dream that’s now coming true. I’m thrilled.” The NLS-Light premiere follows the usual schedule of the ADAC Nürburgring Langstrecken-Serie. Qualifying runs from 08:30 to 10:00. The pitwalk starts at 10:20, followed by the grid walk at 11:10, offering fans a full sensory experience of motorsport. Also on-site on Saturday: Racebot and Nürburgring mascot “Legend.” The race begins at 12:00. The new VLN fan collection will be available in the paddock. The livestream kicks off at 08:15 and runs through the entire race day.

Dacia thrills visitors with event at Nürburgring Offroad Park

30.06.2025

Dacia Germany has brought the Nürburgring Offroad Park to life with a very special event over the past few days. The exciting off-road terrain is just a stone's throw away from the famous Nordschleife and offers a wide range of uses across 80,000 square meters. Dacia Germany has now used this for an event that is well worth seeing. Highlights included a vehicle camp with roof tent overnight stays and campfire romance, as well as high-speed laps by rally legend Sébastien Loeb in his Dakar race car. Carbon body, all-wheel drive, and a 360 hp V6 engine: the Dacia Sandrider usually takes on the rough tracks of the Dakar Rally. This year, the famous test of endurance for man and machine covered around 8,000 kilometers through the desert of Saudi Arabia. Now the vehicle, which won several stages of the Dakar, celebrated its premiere at the Nürburgring – fittingly in parallel with the ADAC RAVENOL 24h Nürburgring, which is also world-famous and unforgiving. In this case, however, the big stage was not the Nordschleife, but the Offroadpark Nürburgring at the foot of the race track. For many years, fun and adrenaline have been waiting there for larger groups, B2B events, and corporate customers of the Nürburgring on an area of around 80,000 square meters. Whether steep uphill, through gravel, or in the middle of water obstacles, the off-road park consists of various modules that can be used individually. Dacia Germany used these to create a spectacular off-road race track for the Dakar racing car – complete with jumps and flying gravel. At the wheel was none other than Frenchman Sébastien Loeb, the most successful rally driver of all time with nine world championship titles. Happy Dacia customers, expert journalists, and influential influencers took their seats alongside the rally legend for an unforgettable ride. There was also plenty to cheer about for many spectators of the 24-hour race: the Dacia Camp was open to all visitors on these days. In addition to a large vehicle exhibition, autograph sessions, and other activities, there was also a competition to win rides in the rally car. Those who weren't riding alongside Loeb and other Dakar pros could test the off-road capabilities of numerous current Dacia models on and off the Nürburgring off-road park under the guidance of experienced race track instructors. As the crowning glory of each day, some Dacia guests experienced the unique camping atmosphere of the Nürburgring. On a large plateau above the area, they enjoyed the campfire atmosphere in roof tents and watched the hustle and bustle around the 24-hour race in the Green Hell.“With this event, Dacia Germany has impressively demonstrated the versatility of our off-road park,” praised Christian Stephani, Managing Director of the Nürburgring. “The laps of the Dacia Sandrider in particular were a rally spectacle the likes of which the Nürburgring Offroad Park has rarely seen before.” ➡️ Want to escape the daily grind. Firefighters trained for emergencies

26.06.2025

Emergency services in action at the Nürburgring Offroad Park. Intensive training for real-life emergencies took place here: firefighters from all over Germany trained for operations in rough terrain on the versatile grounds of the Nürburgring Offroad Park. The focus was on intensive training days: a practical course run by Schmitt GmbH Feuerwehrtechnik and a comprehensive training session for the volunteer fire departments of the Adenau municipality association. The goal: To give emergency services a better understanding of the capabilities of their emergency vehicles off paved roads, thereby increasing their confidence in their ability to respond in an emergency. The focus was on driving on challenging terrain – with realistic conditions such as inclines, deep ground, narrow passages, and water crossings. The off-road park provided the ideal environment for this. “Natural events are increasingly leading to operations in rough terrain, which has resulted in more off-road vehicles being purchased by fire departments,” explains Guido Weiler, spokesperson for Feuerwehrtechnik Schmitt. “To ensure the highest possible level of safety during emergency response, we offer off-road training for fire department drivers in cooperation with the Nürburgring.” Marco Romes, deputy fire chief of the Adenau municipal association, adds: “The flooding in the Ahr Valley has shown how important it is to be able to handle off-road emergency vehicles safely in order to cope with extreme situations – the terrain of the Nürburgring Offroad Park offers ideal conditions for this.”The vehicles used – from classic fire engines to off-road special equipment – mastered the varied challenges of the off-road park impressively. The participating fire departments were enthusiastic about the learning success, the practical implementation, and the opportunity to push the limits of their technology in a safe environment. The Nürburgring operating company sees this use of the off-road park as a strong example of the social added value of the site: “Everyone praises what has been tested at the Nürburgring – this applies not only to vehicles in the automotive industry, but also to emergency services, who can train here under realistic conditions,” explains Nürburgring Managing Director Christian Stephani. “We are delighted that the Nürburgring, with its off-road park, offers practical benefits for organizations that save lives in emergencies – and thus contributes to public safety.” However, it is not only fire departments that will benefit from the versatile terrain. The Nürburgring operating company also sees ideal training conditions for organizations such as the Technische Hilfswerk (THW), the German Armed Forces, and the German Red Cross (DRK). This business area is to be expanded further in the future. In addition, the off-road park will continue to be available to companies and for B2B events – in particular manufacturers of off-road and commercial vehicles who wish to use the site for product testing, vehicle demonstrations, or customer events.

German Historic Langstrecken Championship starting in 2026

25.06.2025

The 2026 motorsport season is already casting its shadow: a new series highlight was unveiled at the ADAC RAVENOL 24h Nürburgring in the form of the German Historic Langstrecken Championship. The season comprises four endurance races, which will be held on top dates on the entire Nürburgring circuit. The new championship offers thrilling racing action, authentic motorsport, and a tribute to the golden age of endurance racing – right in the heart of the Green Hell. The series promoter is KES Race & Events GmbH, which has been successfully organizing the Youngtimer Trophy for over 30 years.
