At the 50th edition of the Oldtimer Grand Prix, visitors will experience a programme full of legendary vehicles. The organisers are currently receiving entries for the twelve races of Germany's most traditional classic car festival on a daily basis and are hoping for sensationally filled races. The race of the sports cars up to '65, for example, is full, and its one-hour run at dusk on Saturday evening is an atmospheric highlight of the weekend. The DTM cars of the "Golden Era" will shine with a star line-up, the DRM revival race promises spectacular touring cars from the 70s. On the grandstands around the Grand Prix circuit, classic car fans can look forward to twelve racing classes and fascinating demonstration drives. One of the highlights of the entire weekend will be the race of the two-seater racing cars and GTs up to 1965. Technically and aesthetically, these vehicles represent an absolute pinnacle of motorsport, and at the Oldtimer Grand Prix, these unique vehicles can be seen in a full starting field: Ferrari, Maserati and Lotus, Porsche and Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar and Aston Martin - real legends meet here. In addition, both races of these vehicles provide highlights in the programme: On Saturday evening, the race goes on for more than an hour into the twilight - the finish in the darkness accompanied by fireworks is the crowning glory of the weekend. And on Sunday, before the actual start of the race, the drivers demonstrate how the race used to be started at Le Mans: This starting procedure, in which the drivers sprint to the car at the signal of the race director and only then drive off, will also be demonstrated by the participants of the "Vintage Nürburgring" - they form another highlight of the programme with this demonstration and the laps of the pre-war racing cars on Saturday. These oldest racing cars of the weekend can be experienced in the historic paddock and in three demo runs during the weekend on the race track. Touring car highlights promise action-packed memoriesTouring car racing, which is traditionally strong in Germany, will also be a main focus at the Oldtimer Grand Prix. The top series of the 70s will come back to life in the DRM revival race. Group 5 cars, the legendary Ford Capri, the BMW 320 Turbo or the De Tomaso Pantera GTS will meet here. Spectators can also look forward to a strong line-up in the race of the Golden Touring Car Era. Here, it is mainly the DTM cars of the 1980s that come together, supplemented by STW cars of the 1990s and related touring cars. The highlight: many of these fantastic cars will be driven by the stars of the past, because once again, a whole squad of former DTM drivers has signed up. For example, the championship top three of the inaugural DTM season in 1984, Volker Strycek (in an Opel), Olaf Manthey (ex-Blaupunkt BMW M3) and Harald Grohs (also in a BMW) will be there. The rest of the line-up is also a who's who of DTM history. A stroll through the paddock is a mustThat this 50th edition of the Oldtimer Grand Prix is something very special becomes clear as soon as you make your way through the paddock, where there are many new things to discover. In the historic paddock from the 1920s, for example, not only the Vintage Nürburgring as a meeting of pre-war racing cars is further upgraded and enjoys lively popularity. The 50th edition of the Oldtimer Grand Prix will offer three days of thrilling historic motorsport at the Nürburgring from 11 - 13 August 2023. Great emotions await professionals, amateurs and spectators at around 50 events from the genres of motorsport, music and sport. Highlights include the ADAC TotalEnergies 24h Nürburgring and the 12h Nürburgring of the Nürburgring Endurance Series as well as the 50th anniversary of the Oldtimer-Grand-Prix, the mega festival Rock am Ring or sporting events such as Rad am Ring or the Hotfoot Run. The AvD-Oldtimer-Grand-Prix is "Back on Track": The most important continental European festival for classic racing cars has returned with an atmospheric motorsport weekend, after there had been spectator restrictions due to Corona and a cancellation due to the flood disaster at the Ahr in the past two years. More than 20 races and regularity tests in perfect midsummer conditions compensated the 30,000 visitors as well as teams and drivers for the long waiting time and created a great atmosphere at the Nürburgring. Highlights included runs of historic Cosworth-era Formula 1 cars, sports car races with fields from the 1950s to the 2010s and much more. There was also a new highlight with the first guest appearance of the DTM Classic Cup, where many of the stars of yesteryear climbed back into their unforgotten touring race cars. The future of the event is also permanently secured: The organisers of the event reached an early agreement with the representatives of the tradition-steeped Eifel race track on a continuation of the many years of good cooperation and an extension of the event contract far beyond the current term, which is secured until next year. The AvD-Oldtimer-Grand-Prix will be held at the Ring for the next five years from 2024 to 2028. At this year's AvD-Oldtimer-Grand-Prix, the Nürburgring was once again transformed into a real time machine, allowing visitors to travel back to the unforgotten vehicles and races of the past 100 years. The oldest racing cars from the pre-war years, for example, were invited to take part in regularity tests and rides as part of the "Vintage Sports Car Trophy" organised together with the Allgemeiner Schnauferl Club (ASC). Among them: Peterheinz Kern in the Mercedes 680 S in which Rudolf Caracciola won the opening race at the Nürburgring in 1927. Uli Sauer, who is the event's most loyal participant with 49 participations in the AvD-Oldtimer-Grand-Prix, competed in a 1938 BMW 328. "I am very satisfied with the weekend," he summed up - probably also representing many other participants. "To be honest, the race result doesn't count for me - my shelf at home is full of trophies, I don't really need any more. But I want to have fun with classic car friends, and that has succeeded here all round. I am very satisfied with the whole weekend." This opinion was shared by others. For example, ex-DTM driver Peter Oberndorfer, who came to the Eifel as series manager of the newly founded DTM Classic Cup: "I used to start here often myself and had a new perspective this weekend. The OGP is an internationally important event, so it was fitting to include this event in the DTM Classic Cup season calendar. The flair is unique, there are many visitors and very many beautiful cars here at the Nürburgring: we fitted in well here as a series, it was worth coming here." Many DTM drivers from the past, such as Olaf Manthey, Volker Strycek, Kris Nissen, Marc Hessel, Roland Asch or Leopold Prinz von Bayern, paid their respects in the series, which brought unforgettable cars such as the BMW M3, Opel Calibra, Mercedes-Benz 190 Evo and many others back to the track. "Birdcage" Maserati, Mercedes-Benz 300 SL, Porsche 904 and RSK 718, Jaguar C- and D-Type, Lotus Eleven - the list of legendary sports cars in the top-class starting field presented some of the most beautiful and legendary sports cars of all times. Equally unforgettable, however, were the models in other races. After the end of the travel restrictions in the Corona pandemic, the international friends of the event were finally able to participate again. Among them were no less than four racing series of the British "Masters Historic Racing" organisation, which contributed one of the most spectacular races with the field of Formula 1 racing cars of the Cosworth era. But the sports car and GT entry fields of the other Masters series were also strong and made for a vibrant air at the Nürburgring. The British HGPCA (Historic Grand Prix Cars Association) contributed a field of fascinating monoposti from the Formula 1 founding years. Three other racing series were brought to the Nürburgring by the Historic Racing Drivers' Association (FHR). Here, the field of CanAm and Group C sports cars also included a real Ring legend: A Porsche 917 driven by Willi Kauhsen in the early 70s. He went down in Nürburgring history when he chauffeured the then Federal President Gustav Heinemann around the partly snow-covered Nordschleife in a 917 in the spring of 1973. Traditional event secured: contract extended ahead of scheduleThe organisers of the AvD-Oldtimer-Grand-Prix can start into the future with a lot of confidence after the contract for the continuation of the event at the Nürburgring was extended ahead of schedule. Subject to the naturally unpredictable scheduling constellations in the respective years, the organisers and the circuit operators are aiming to have the largest classic car racing event in continental Europe take place on the traditional date in mid-August. Next year, the 50th AvD-Oldtimer-Grand-Prix will celebrate a "round birthday", and the conclusion of the contract guarantees that this edition will be followed by several more. KG, the signing of the contract is an important signal: "The AvD Oldtimer Grand Prix represents the entire motorsport history of our race track," explains Managing Director Ingo Böder. "The vehicles that compete here have fascinated visitors to the 'Green Hell' for decades and bring the great moments to life. Together with the many racing cars in the team and racing series tents, this created the unique flair for which the event is known. Skoda, for example, presented a whole range of rare historic models, some of which came directly from the factory museum in Mlada Boleslav, Czech Republic, to the Eifel. "We were able to successfully present ourselves here with Skoda and also bring our long brand history to life with many guests and partners as well as models from many decades," Andreas Leue (Skoda Auto Deutschland, Tradition & Projects) summed up. Seven-time German Rally Champion and Skoda brand ambassador Matthias Kahle adds: "A compliment to the organisers: After two difficult years with restrictions and one cancellation, this year was a successful new start. The AvD Oldtimer Grand Prix will remain an integral part of the Nürburgring event calendar in the long term. The operators of the race track and the organisers of the classic event agreed at an early stage to continue their cooperation until 2028. The largest classic car racing event in continental Europe will continue to take place in mid-August in the future. The extension of the event contract was already decided one year before the original contract expires in 2023 and thus underlines the good cooperation. Next year, the 50th AvD-Oldtimer-Grand-Prix will celebrate a "round birthday" and the conclusion of the contract guarantees that this edition will be followed by several more. "We are very pleased to ensure continuity - not only for our spectators in the grandstands, but above all to remain an important fixed point in the annual calendar for teams and drivers. The agreement with our partners at the Nürburgring also gives us security for all subsequent planning," says Wolfgang Schulz as co-managing director of the organisers' association. The signing of the contract is also an important signal for the operators of the race track: "The AvD Oldtimer Grand Prix represents the entire motorsport history of our race track," explains the Managing Director of Nürburgring 1927 GmbH & Co. KG, Ingo Böder. "The vehicles that compete here have fascinated visitors to the 'Green Hell' for decades and bring the great moments to life. The AvD-Oldtimer-Grand-Prix offers a giant festival of historic motorsport at the Nürburgring this coming weekend. Fourteen different competitions with more than two dozen races and regularity tests and more than 500 historic racing cars are on the programme. Everything that makes the heart of classic car lovers beat faster can be seen on the track, from historic Formula 1 to powerful sports cars and prototypes to fantastically beautiful racing classics. The highlight is the full field of two-seater racing cars and GTs up to 1960/61, whose popular Le Mans start demonstration followed by a 65-minute race on Saturday evening is the highlight of the weekend. Before this collection of legendary and rare sports cars takes to the starting grid, numerous other sports car icons will also be on display on the Nürburgring Grand Prix circuit. The historical spectrum here ranges from the 60s to the recent past. Touring cars and GTs from various eras will also be on show in several starting fields. Good prospects for the AvD Oldtimer Grand Prix (August 12 - 14): Entries are in full swing, and new, exciting entries are currently trickling in to the organizers on a daily basis. The largest classic racing festival in continental Europe will once again live up to its excellent reputation this year and promises an emotional weekend dominated by historic racing. Excursions into Formula 1 history can be experienced live on the track, as can the spectacular sports cars of earlier times at Le Mans and the World Sports Car Championship. One race in particular is always in the spotlight, and this year's event will once again be an atmospheric highlight: In the heats of the two-seater race cars and GTs up to 1960/61, the focus is on the sports cars of the 1950s. Here, birdcage Maserati meets Porsche 356 and 904, "gullwing" Mercedes 300 SL meets Lotus, Lola and Ferrari - a showcase of some of the most beautiful racing cars of all time. For many spectators, the races of the DTM Classic Cup, which is a guest at the AvD Oldtimer Grand Prix for the first time, will be just as emotionally charged. The pre-war racing cars that start here no longer race, but they show what they are made of in regularity tests on the Grand Prix circuit and in excursions. The oldest vehicles of the weekend so far will be the almost 100-year-old Salmson Rally Grand Prix and a Riley Brooklands 9 (both built in 1929).
